Allison I - Chapter 5

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

This is probably going to be the last update of the year, as the next chapter of Vamp! is a pretty lengthy one. It's a little early, but have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Vamp! IV - Chapter 3

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Sorry for the late update. I was horribly distracted by a certain video game featuring a vampire named Val who used to look like Huey Laforet.

Also, apologies in advance to speakers of British English if you do a spit take at the name of a certain character introduced in this chapter. I've provided the character's name in katakana at the end of the update, so if you find it impossible to take the name seriously, please suggest alternatives.

EDIT: Updated the end of the post with visual references for some of the Organization members.

Finally, a Vamp! update.

To readers: Reader NullApostle has kindly compiled a detailed list of information on Vamp! in a text file here, if anyone wants to work on a relevant wiki or database.

Another update. Remember, there will be very few illustrations from this volume, as I don't have access to a scanner.

Allison I - Chapter 1

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Here's the first chapter of Allison I. If you haven't already noticed, there's a new link in the sidebar: the AWLTMS Database. It contains all the information so far presented in the series, and hopefully I'll come back to update it after each chapter. Allison's world is huge and full of interesting details, so please check it out! (Warning: Always read the latest update before going to the database.)

On that note, please suggest different name spellings for terms on the list that have katakana listed next to it. Allison takes place in something resembling Europe, so I need mostly suggestions from people with knowledge of European languages. Thank you in advance!

Vamp! IV - Color Pages+Extra Episode A

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

[My sincerest apologies for the wait, ladies and gentlemen! It has been much too long. Ah, in the spirit of wishing for cordial relations between you and I, allow me to tell you a tale about the relationships between vampires and humans. There was, you see, a mass disappearance in southern Germany. Our Organization called a meeting to discuss this incident, but at the same time, Young Mihail left the island of Growerth with some resolution in mind! Naturally, my daughter Ferret followed after him to the mainland... If only it had ended up a bittersweet elopement between two young people... What will come of the connection between this human-vampire couple? Tragedy? Or romance? I truly look forward to seeing what you think of this long, long tale that stretches on even to this very day.]

Allison I - Prologue

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

A very short update (bordering on being a preview), but here is the prologue of one of Keiichi Sigsawa's other light novel series, Allison. My opinion? I came for Sigsawa's writing and stayed for the worldbuilding. It's very good, although the first volume isn't quite as amazing as the rest of the series.

For those not in the know, Allison and its sequel Lillia and Treize were adapted into an anime series called Allison and Lillia several years ago. The general consensus seems to be that the anime was enjoyable, but wasn't completely faithful as an adaptation (Don't quote me on this, though, since I haven't seen the anime in a long time. All I can say is that I think one of the main characters was completely miscast).

(A note for those who've only watched the Allison and Lillia anime: The novels involve graphic violence. If you're not comfortable with gory imagery and description, you may want to avoid the books.)

As is apparent from the cover page, this is a series that has lots to do with flying. As is the case with Gakuen Kino, there may be inaccuracies and inconsistencies in my descriptions of aircraft-related exposition. I'd appreciate all the help I could get.

As is not apparent from the cover page, this is a series that takes place in something like a fantasy version of Europe (culturally speaking, anyway). As is the case with Vamp!, I'm going to need help with many of the proper nouns; most of the names seem to be pseudo-European in origin, so I'd appreciate all the help I could get.

Allison has three books, divided across four volumes. The sequel, Lillia and Treize, is composed of six volumes. The spin-off, Meg and Seron, is seven volumes long. And finally, the finale, Tale of a Single Continent, is two volumes long. Hopefully I'll get around to working on all of them within my lifetime.

Uh... this preamble's longer than the actual update, but take a look, and stay tuned for the first chapter!

Kino's Journey Volume 16 - Epilogue

The second part of the story. The formatting on the blogspot version isn't all that great, so I suggest that you download the PDF version (which includes both the Prologue and the Epilogue) here.

Enjoy.

Kino's Journey Volume 16 - Prologue

I realized that translating Kino's Journey is great for winding down after going through plot-heavy stuff like Baccano! and Vamp! (although it has been an entire month since I finished Vamp! III...). Kind of like interludes between tougher series.

Anyway, I recently got a hold of Kino's Journey 16, Baccano! 18, and all six volumes of Lillia and Treize. I'm scheduled to receive Allison sometime this week if things go according to plan, so hopefully I can get started on Vamp! IV and Allison once my assignment schedules eases up mid-October.

Announcements aside, this story from Kino's Journey 16 is one of my new favorite stories in the series. Stay tuned for the Epilogue!

Status update

Hello everyone. Sorry for the near-month of silence.

I've safely moved to Korea and I'm mostly settled down. But I haven't been able to get much done in the way of translation--there was furniture to shop for, forms to fill out, and dozens upon dozens of relatives to visit. But! I found these comics floating around the internet and managed to work on them. They basically describe the plight of the Korean geek during the holidays (this upcoming Thursday is Chuseok--Korea's biggest national holiday). Read from left to right, and enjoy.

(Status update on projects: The Prologue and Epilogue of Kino's Journey 16 is in progress. Vamp! and About Death are currently on hold until I can get something of a routine living here. As for the ever-elusive Allison [and the rest], I'm waiting for my alien registration card, which I need to make online orders. Thanks for your patience!)

Vamp! III - Epilogue

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Trivia: Rudy, Theresia, and Melhilm are named after German filmmakers: Wim Wenders, Leni Riefenstahl, and Werner Herzog respectively. Is there any significance to this naming scheme? It is a mystery.

Anyway, Volumes II and III of Vamp! are finally finished.

Get the mobi version here, courtesy of Andyy.

Coming up next in the way of Narita works should be Vamp! IV, which features… a larger-than-usual cast, if that means anything to Narita veterans. Unfortunately, I don't have scans for this book or the one after it, and I won't have access to a scanner until next year, so you'll either have to put up with a text-only translation without any illustrations or wait until summer 2014 at the earliest for my craptastic scans. What would you prefer? Make your voice heard in the comments section! (Or better yet, direct me to full scans of the two books.)

In related news, I'll be taking a break from translation for a few weeks. I'm preparing for my move to Korea, and it'll take me some time to settle down and get everything in order.

As for my other projects, Allison will begin mid-September at the earliest, and I'm still (slowly) working on the second volume of About Death. *sigh*

Vamp! III - Chapter 11

Finally, the last chapter. There are four epilogues left after this, but I'm not sure yet if I want to group them all together or put them up separately. Anyway, enjoy!

Vamp! III - Color Pages

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

[It has been a long time, ladies and gentlemen! Today, allow me to impart to you a tale most vicious in nature.]

[Vengeance. Ah, yes. A tale of vengeance. It is a universal theme in the realm of fiction, present in every genre from adventure to tragedy.]

[It is often said that vengeance gives birth to yet more vengeance. But what, pray tell, would happen if the avenger left nothing behind that could continue the cycle? If he were bent on erasing everything about his target, from his family to his distant relatives?]

[Indeed, he would have his revenge. But there is one thing he will never take hold of from that day forth--peace.]

[After all, a man who is prepared to go so far will ultimately wish to turn that vengeance upon himself and the world.]

And so, the curtain rises on the hour of vampires...

Vamp! II - Chapter 6+Extra Chapter

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Here's the final update for Vamp! II. The second part of the story, Volume III, will begin very soon.

Gakuen Kino 4 - Chapter 7 (Finale)+Chapter 6.5

That's it for Gakuen Kino 4. The PDF can be downloaded here.

Volume 5? That's probably a project for next summer. Baseball ahoy!

I'd also like to thank everyone for voting on the Allison poll. The chronological option won by a landslide, so that's what I'll be aiming for: The entire series, starting with Allison. Of course, keep in mind that it might take quite a bit of time for me to get my hands on the books--no earlier than September, and that's only if I'm lucky. But I'll do everything I can to start working on the translation as soon as possible.

Enjoy the update!

Vamp! II - Chapter 5

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

I've made a change to one of the terms I've been using in this series. 'Imposing control' is now 'subjugation'. I'm not going to go back to change all the blog updates, but the pdf is going to reflect the changes.

Enjoy the chapter!

Vamp! II - Chapter 4

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

This was a physically draining chapter to translate. Narita's written plenty of violent stuff before, but I think this chapter kind of takes the cake in terms of emotional intensity (for now, anyway).

Enjoy! (or maybe not.)

Gakuen Kino 4 - Chapter 7 (Part 4)

The Allison/Lillia and Treize/Meg and Seron poll from the previous post is still up, in case you haven't voted yet. It looks like the chronological option is winning by quite a bit, but I'll keep the poll running until I finish this volume of Gakuen Kino.

Enjoy!

Bleach: Spirits are Forever With You - Postscript (by Kubo and Narita)

NOTE: PLEASE DON'T ASK ME TO WORK ON THE REST OF OF SPIRITS ARE FOREVER WITH YOU. I AM NOT GOING TO SUMMARIZE OR TRANSLATE EXCERPTS FROM THIS BOOK OTHER THAN WHAT IS IN THIS POST.

Ahem.

With that out of the way, here is the postscript from the Tite Kubo-Ryohgo Narita collaboration, Bleach: Spirits are Forever With You! As an unabashed fan of Bleach, I was very excited to read this novel (which was split into two parts). Narita and Kubo both have an amazing track record when it comes to creating loads and loads of characters, and I was very curious to see where this team-up would lead.

Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Without giving away anything, I especially enjoyed how Narita's trademark character-juggling style meshed so well with the Bleach universe. In the end, I was left profoundly satisfied as a fan of both Bleach and Narita's works, and now I hope Kubo and Narita decide to collaborate again for even more amazing novel goodness.

So without further ado, here are Kubo and Narita's postscripts. Why the postscripts, of all things? Maybe I was in a very postscript-y mood. Even I don't know.

(By the way, I know it's cool to bash Bleach and/or Kubo on the internets these days. But keep it to a minimum, please. I don't want to have to shut down the comments section.)

Gakuen Kino 4 - Chapter 7 (Part 2)

The slowness of Gakuen Kino updates is due to the fact that this volume is loaded with music-related exposition. Which you'll see more of under the cut. Enjoy!

Vamp! II - Colour Pages

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Let's start off the second volume of Vamp! This is the first book in a two-part story, divided into the 'Day Side' and the 'Night Side', kind of like the two parts of Baccano 1933.

By the way, there was a character from the first volume whose true form wasn't revealed in the story. If you'd like a bit of fun, try and figure out what they actually look like before you start reading this volume. The answer's in volume 1, and it's surprisingly easy to find.

I'll also be making a PDF at the end of this volume.

Gakuen Kino 4 - Chapter 7 (Part 1)

Sorry for the delay. Part 1 is here!

Remember to read Land with a Diva (Kino's Journey vol. 10, chapter 7) before you read this volume. Enjoy!

Vamp! II - Preview

What is the goal of the Eater who has come to the festival?

[It has been a long time, my dear friends! Still avid readers of literature, I presume? If you are a true book-lover, then I shall humbly suggest that you properly purchase your books instead of borrowing them.]

[Ah, my apologies. Let us set aside matters of the material world. Instead, allow me to introduce to you an annual festival that takes place on this island.]

[It is a carnival held in honor of Growerth’s proudest son, the artist Carnald Strassburg! Once every year the island receives visitors of all sorts, each with their own distinctive hopes. From the vows of lovers to the hopes of peace in the family, to the clearing of one’s past and one’s dreams for the future. Guests welcome and unbidden alike participate in this festival, so I ask that you also enjoy it a hundred and twenty percent!]

[After all, the world belongs to humans like you--at least until the sun sinks into the distant horizon in the west.]

Vamp! Volume II, coming soon!

Gakuen Kino 4 - Prologue

Rounding out the four days of updates is the prologue of Gakuen Kino 4! Presumably a parody of/homage to the super popular K-On! (But I wouldn't know, seeing as I've never watched it), this volume assumes that you've read Chapter 7 of Kino's Journey 10.

Updates will not be regular this year, since I seem to work better off-schedule. But hopefully this means that I'll be able to do a better job with this series than before.

I'm still looking for scans of Gakuen Kino, so please let me know if you happen to know where I can find them!

(No, the guns have not been replaced by musical instruments. It just wouldn't be Gakuen Kino without the many trips to Wikipedia for grueling firearms research. orz)

This novel is 100% a work of fiction.

It may bear some resemblance to real events, truths, Kino’s Journey ~the Beautiful World~, firearms, fried chicken, and warriors of justice, but no one knows if this is a coincidence or not.

Kino's Journey Volume 10 - Chapter 7

Sorry about the wait--the hiatus is over, and hopefully I will be graduating this year!

Here's what's happening with my translation schedule now:
1. Finish up 1711: Whitesmile, hopefully by mid-May.
2. About Death has finished its serialization, so I'll be scanlating the entire series (just over 20 chapters) at a pace of about two chapters a week. Starting in the next few days.
3. Begin working on Gakuen Kino 4 immediately.
4. After Whitesmile will be Vamp! volumes II and III.
5. After (or maybe during) Gakuen Kino 4 will be the first two volumes of Meg and Seron.

Basically, this means that I'll probably be working on only one Narita series and one Sigsawa series at any given time.

So without further ado, here is the longest chapter in all of Kino's Journey, the story of the land with a diva.

Friday, 15 March 2013

Hiatus notice

I wish I didn't have to do this, especially in the middle of working on Whitesmile. But schoolwork is piling up, so I'll be taking a break from translation for the next month or so.

I'll be back in mid-to-late April with the rest of Whitesmile and a very long chapter of Kino's Journey.

(I might also start working on the rest of About Death, but no guarantees!)

Vamp! I - Epilogue

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Here's the final update of the first volume of Vamp! Thanks everyone for participating in the name spelling discussion. Volume I's names are set in stone now, unless someone can come up with an earth-shattering revelation that defies description.

To be honest, this is my least favourite book in the Vamp! series (it's not that I dislike this volume, though). So it was a bit of a pain to get through. But I'm of the opinion that this series gets better each volume, so far culminating in volume 5, which is my favourite book in the series and was my favourite Narita novel until 1711 dethroned it last week.

On that note, translation work on 1711: Whitesmile has already started. It's the final volume in the 1700s arc of Baccano, and I'll be making comments on the chapters as I post updates. Stay tuned!

(I'm probably going to work on volumes 2 and 3 of Vamp, which are parts 1 and 2 of the same story, once I finish Whitesmile.)

Vamp! I - Chapter 3

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

There's just one update left until the end of this volume, so I'd like to encourage you to participate in the name-spelling discussion if you haven't! I'm going to upload the pdf with the next update, which means that spellings will be set in stone at that point.

Enjoy the new chapter!

Vamp! I - Chapter 2

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

That took a while, but it was worth it. Here is Chapter 2 of Vamp! Set aside some time, because it's a loooooooong update.

Also, there are more name spellings to talk about at the end of this update. I'm also looking for some clarification on vampire lore, so please take a stab at it!

Vamp! I - Chapter 1

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Hello, everyone! Here is the first chapter of Vamp!

As for the character name debate, thank you everyone for all your input! I didn't get a chance to reply to all the comments, but I've read them all and made what are hopefully the final decisions. Ferret is still Ferret, but I'm waiting for more suggestions for her name (whether you want to keep it that way or otherwise), so please make your voices heard!

Also, I will be working on a pdf of this volume. I'll do my best to post it at the same time as the final update.

In other news, volume 17 of Baccano (1711:Whitesmile) has just been released in Korea! It hasn't come in the mail yet, but rest assured that I will get to work on it as soon as I finish this volume of Vamp.

Vamp! I - Prologue

The prologues are here! It'll be a while until the next update, since Vamp chapters are really really long. Enjoy!

Vamp! I - Colour Pages

(Download the updated version in PDF/epub format here.)

Ladies and gentlemen! Here is the first update of Vamp, a story about vampires written by the excellent Ryogo Narita.

Unfortunately, I could not get a hold of decent scans for a good majority of the illustrations in this book. This is why the illustrations that were not included in the Baccano art book have been unskilfully scanned by yours truly from the Korean volumes in my possession. If anyone could provide me with a full set of illustration scans, I would appreciate it very much. Problem solved! Thanks everyone for the links!

On another note, I know absolutely nothing about German and other related languages. Which can be quite the obstacle when you're trying to figure out (pseudo-)German names from Japanese. When I am having problems with figuring out name spellings, I will set aside a section at the end of the update asking for help from the readers. In fact, there's one such section at the end of this very update.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy this new series!
